Garage doors are a scam-friendly trade: failures are urgent, prices are opaque, and the customer can't easily verify what's broken. DFW, as a huge market, gets more than its share of the national bad actors. Here's the playbook so you recognize it.
The bait-and-switch: a $29–$49 advertised "spring special" gets a truck to your driveway, where the tech "discovers" you need a lifetime hardware package, new rollers, new cables, and a rebuild — $700–$1,500 for what was a $180–$380 spring job. The advertised price was never real; it exists to win the phone call.
Five tells you're dealing with a lead-reseller or scam operation:
1. The phone agent can't tell you where the company is physically located — you've reached a national call center that auctions your job to whoever's nearby.
2. The advertised price is under $75 for any actual repair. Real springs cost real money before labor.
3. The tech quotes verbally and pressures you to decide "while the truck's here." Legitimate companies quote in writing and the number holds.
4. Everything needs replacing. A worn roller is plausible; a door that suddenly needs springs, cables, rollers, drums, bearings, and an opener is an invoice, not a diagnosis.
5. No local footprint: no local address area, no Google Business Profile with real reviews, a website with no city you can pin them to.
What legitimate looks like: a flat service call fee disclosed up front ($75 here, waived if we do the work), a written itemized quote after inspection, published typical ranges so you can sanity-check the number, and a company you can find — a real profile, real reviews, a real person answering. That's the standard we built Pebblegrove Home Services LLC around, and it's the standard you should hold any company to, including us.
Typically $180–$380 for a single torsion spring installed, $280–$550 for a pair. Quotes far below that are bait; quotes far above need a written itemization you can question line by line.
Usually not as sold in a driveway upsell. A lifetime warranty on parts is only as good as the labor charges to swap them and the company still existing — pay for correctly sized high-cycle springs instead; that's the upgrade with physics behind it.
