Repair or Replace Your Garage Door? An Honest Decision Framework

Repair wins when the failure is a wear part. Springs, cables, rollers, openers, and single damaged panels are consumables on a door whose sections and track are sound. A $180–$380 spring job on a structurally healthy door buys you years — replacing the whole door because a spring broke is like replacing a car because the battery died.

Replace when any of these are true:

1. The 50% rule. The repair quote is approaching half the cost of a new installed door ($900–$2,200 single-car, $1,400–$4,500 double). Common with multi-panel damage or rotted wood doors.

2. The model is discontinued. If a matched panel no longer exists, cosmetic repair is off the table and structural repair gets improvised. We'll tell you quickly if your door falls in this bucket.

3. It's a pre-1993 door or a one-piece door. Older hardware predates modern safety standards (photo eyes, pinch-resistant sections, contained springs), and parts are scarce. These doors can be maintained, but every dollar in is a dollar you won't get back.

4. You're selling. Garage door replacement is perennially at or near the top of Remodeling-magazine-style cost-vs-value studies, because it's a third of the house's street face. An insulated door also materially cools a Texas garage.

The honest middle case: an aging-but-sound door that needs springs and an opener at once. That's usually still a repair — roughly $280–$550 plus $350–$750 lands under a new-door budget and resets the clock on all the wear parts at once.
